Last updated 13:00 04/02/2011
Hundreds of cyclists are expected to line up once again for Sunday's annual Peak Fuel Lakes to Sea Fun Ride co-hosted by Avanti Plus Nelson and Tasman Wheelers.
This classic 80km ride has been in operation since 2000 with entries one year reaching 280. All riders' abilities are catered for, with four grades allowing plenty of time to complete the course.
The ride starts with the sign on from 8.30am at Kerr Bay, Lake Rotoiti, and the fun will start with the social riders off at 9.15am, recreational riders at 9.45am, intermediate riders at 10.15am and the cream of the cycling fraternity, the racers, departing at 10.30am.
Although this ride is open to any competent cyclist, young riders must be accompanied by an adult. Choose the grade that best suits your riding ability and be prepared for some healthy fun.
The fun ride begins on the lake shore, following State Highway 63, turning left at Tophouse corner and travelling through the Tophouse Rd past Kikiwa Substation. Riders then head over Kerr's Hill and the Reay Saddle before riding down the Wai-iti Valley onto State Highway 6 through Wakefield and towards Brightwater.
At the Rutherford Memorial, riders turn left into Ellis St and on towards Waimea West. At the end of the long straight, riders turn into River Rd and then left on to Highway 60 near the Appleby Bridge. Riders continue along the main highway through Pea Viner Corner, turning right onto Redwood Rd past Seifried estate and down to the finish line on the last straight before the Rabbit Island roundabout.
Prize giving will be about 2pm at the after-race barbecue near the beach, so bring the family and have a swim afterwards. A free sausage wrap and cold drink are included in the entry fee and served by Rutherford Rotary.
You can enter online at avantiplusnelson.co.nz or drop your entry into Stewarts Avanti Plus Nelson at 114 Hardy St. Pre-entries at $25 close today and late entries taken on the day will cost $30.
