THE PEER SUPPORT PROGRAMME

Dear Colleagues

I am the District 9970 Chairman of the Peer Support Committee for this district. I am also the district’s representative on the NZ Peer Support Trust. I am seeking your help to find a Rotarian from our district who is interested in joining me on the District committee.

Peer Support is a programme begun in New Zealand by Rotary some 28 years ago. It provides a programme of support for new students usually Year 9 when they start high school. The programme trains teachers to run the programme and relies on developing senior students as a peer support leaders who can then provide support to younger students. Over the years it has proved highly successful and exists in about 2/3 of high schools throughout New Zealand. The main focus of the Peer Support Trust’s work is to continue to publicise the programme and to provide training for teachers each year.

The time commitment for a person joining the District’s peer support committee would be to attend committee meetings which are usually held three to four times a year at times to suit those on the committee. In addition there is a national conference held every two years.

I would be delighted to hear from any Rotarian who is interested in promoting youth development programmes by joining the district committee. This is a very worthwhile programme to be involved in. I can be contacted either by email allenp@xtra.co.nz or phone 03 313 4971 or 027 410 3325.

Yours in Rotary

Peter Allen
District 9970 Peer Support Committee chair
